Preparing Your Garden for Autumn

Preparing Your Garden for Autumn

As we move out of this sunny period, and the days get shorter and colder, your first instinct is to spend more time wrapped up on the sofa, and less time gardening. But, autumn is one of the most important times of the year for gardening, it needs that extra bit of attention to help it transition from the warmer to the colder months.

Preparing Your Garden for Autumn

Our landscape gardeners have put together this list to give you an idea of what you should focus on:

  1. Cut the grass

Your grass needs one really good cut before the cold and wet weather sets in, if you leave it to get too long it will be almost impossible to cut it in winter, as the damp grass will clog up your lawn mower.

  1. Clean and tidy

Just as you would spring clean your house, you should autumn clean your garden. Cut back plants and clear out your greenhouse and shed, so you have some space to store your summer furniture. It is also a great time to pressure wash the patio or scrub down the decking, to keep on top of grime building up over the wet winter months.

  1. Don’t let leaves build up

Leaves are public enemy number one when it comes to your garden, they turn into mulch and become slippery and dangerous, especially when they are on top of decking or patio.

  1. Plant your spring bulbs

If you want to see any daffodils or tulips poking through the soil in spring, you need to remember to plant them in autumn. If you need any advice on when, or what, to plant in autumn, speak to our landscape gardeners who can offer some green-thumbed advice.

  1. Protect your pots

The first frost of the year can arrive in autumn, and it can arrive without any warning. This frost can wreak havoc on your favourite plants. If you have plants that are particularly susceptible to the cold, get them in a greenhouse or your conservatory before the first signs of frost set in. If you don’t have a greenhouse or conservatory to make use of, you can wrap your pots in bubble wrap or hessian sacking, this can stop the roots from freezing.
